What if your internship completely changes your outlook on the future?

Nasim, a student of Industrial Engineering – Biochemistry, spent six months during his internship immersed in the world of data, production and innovation at VPK. He developed a machine learning model and a calculation tool that accelerate and optimise the production process. What he learned along the way not only changed his skills, but also his outlook on the future.

From theory to tangible impact

During his internship, Nasim worked on two major projects. First, he developed a machine learning model that predicts actual machine speeds based on historical data. This model helps the team better anticipate production capacity and resolve planning issues more efficiently.

Second, he created a Python-based calculation tool that automatically generates the most efficient stacking patterns for cardboard sheets. Where engineers used to manually weigh different options, the tool now does it in seconds—taking into account time, space, and production logic. The result? A more efficient workflow and less waste.

He translated theory into practice, learned to work with data analysis tools like Power BI, and elevated his programming skills. Thanks to his analytical mindset and technical insights, he helped improve processes within VPK.

“I built something entirely from scratch, and that moment when everything comes together and works as intended—that’s truly magical.”

A motivating, open culture

What Nasim remembers the most was the culture at VPK.

“Everyone sat together at the table. You really feel part of the team. And that naturally makes you want to work harder—because you know who you’re doing it for.”

Weekly feedback sessions and the freedom to ask questions created a learning environment where he could truly thrive.

“The feedback was always sincere and focused on growth. That’s incredibly motivating.”

A full-fledged colleague

What Nasim took away most was a new vision for his future:

“I thought my path would lead to the lab and research, but at VPK I discovered how exciting it is to innovate and collaborate in a production environment. That experience broadened my interests significantly.”

His mentors, Leen and Yente, witnessed that transformation firsthand.

“Nasim brought fresh ideas and actively contributed,” they said. “He immediately felt like a full-fledged colleague. What stood out most was his curiosity—he asked lots of questions, experimented with solutions we hadn’t considered, and regularly came up with suggestions that elevated the project.”

A warm call to students and companies

Nasim encourages other students to fully embrace their internships:

“Be open to learning. Really learning. And don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you’re curious and take initiative, it’s deeply appreciated here.”

He also urges companies to invest in young talent:

“Mentoring an intern takes energy, but you get just as much in return. It’s an investment in someone who genuinely wants to contribute.”

More than just an internship

Nasim’s internship at VPK was not only educational—it was transformative. What began as a casual internship became an experience that forever changed his perspective on work, collaboration, and innovation. And that makes it a two-way success story—for him and for VPK.
