Alizay: Decarbonisation in Action Through Our SBTi Commitment

The VPK Group aims to provide its customers with high-quality products with a low carbon footprint. To achieve this goal, the Group is implementing several renewable energy and decarbonisation projects.

A circular project designed to reduce our carbon footprint

Decarbonisation refers to the process of reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, primarily by decreasing the use of fossil fuels and adopting more sustainable practices. It is a key element in the fight against climate change, as the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere contributes to global warming.

Decarbonisation is essential not only to meet international climate commitments, such as those established under the Paris Agreement, but also to build a sustainable and resilient future in the face of environmental change. It is within this framework that our Alizay project contributes to our SBTi commitment.

The Circular Concept of the Alizay Site

 

The circular model at the Alizay site is built on several pillars:

Waste Reuse

Waste generated from recovered paper sorting is used as a solid recovered fuel and alternative energy source. This fuel is used on-site to power the boilers.

Waste and production rejects from the corrugated packaging plant are directly reused in the paper pulp preparation process, mixed with recovered paper from external sources.

Local Consumption

20% of paper production will be used on-site for the manufacture of corrugated board, packaging, and our Fit2Size product range.

The paper mill will source recovered paper from locations within 250 km of the site.

Water Reuse

The site is equipped with water treatment facilities that not only purify water but also recover anaerobic gases, which are used to fuel our biogas boiler.

A closed loop in action

The Alizay paper and packaging hub is a true circular economy concept.

Our integrated value chain

Each year, the Alizay site will recycle 550,000 tonnes of recovered paper sourced within a maximum radius of 250 km from the mill, thereby minimising transport-related CO2 emissions.

The paper machine has a production capacity of 450,000 tonnes of paper annually. Approximately 20% of this paper will be converted locally into recyclable corrugated board and packaging.

A closed-loop system also means that Alizay’s production waste is reintegrated into its own raw material stream for paper manufacturing. Once again, this eliminates transport-related emissions.

The Alizay site has also invested in the production and use of decarbonised energy. The site operates a 50 MW biomass boiler, providing all the steam required for paper production.

At the same time, waste from the pulper is sorted and used as solid recovered fuel for the boiler. In addition, the wastewater treatment plant includes an anaerobic stage that generates 37,000 MWh of biogas each year.

This source of energy enables the corrugated packaging plant’s boiler to supply green energy.

Our energy recovery initiatives

Wood pellet production

In a context of accelerating climate change, the VPK Group is aligning its strategy with the decarbonisation of its operations and is committed to following the pathway set out in the European Green Deal.

The production of paper and corrugated packaging requires steam. To achieve our SBTi objectives, a gradual conversion of the Group’s gas- and oil-fired boilers to pellet-fired boilers has been decided.

With its long history in wood processing, existing infrastructure, and available space, the Alizay site is ideally suited to host a pellet production facility supplying these new boilers.

Timeline

  • Feasibility study conducted following the acquisition of the Alizay site and the assessment of its development potential.
  • Technical study carried out during the first half of 2023.
  • Administrative permit applications submitted in parallel.
  • Engineering study conducted during the first half of 2024.
  • Building permit obtained at the end of March 2024.
  • Start of civil engineering works: March 2024.
  • Start of equipment installation: May 2024.
  • Wood supply for production: end of 2024.
  • Commissioning and validation of installations: first half of 2025.
  • Full operational performance: mid-2025.

Located on the right-hand side when entering the Alizay site, the facility includes:

  • Dedicated entry and exit access for the installation
  • Two weighbridges
  • Raw material storage area
  • Preparation area
  • Production area
  • Pellet storage area (silos)
  • Recovery of residual heat contained in the flue gases from the onsite biomass boiler
