Graphic designer confirmed

For Ilona, a student of Graphic and Digital Media at Artevelde University of Applied Sciences, her internship at VPK was her first real taste of the professional world. For six weeks, she contributed to the visual side of the new website and helped develop packaging designs. Creating something that’s actually used

“My main task was designing visuals for packaging,” Ilona explains. “But first, I had to learn how to use ArtiosCAD, a software I hadn’t encountered at school.” With it, she could visualize and edit packaging in 3D, then further develop the design in Adobe Illustrator.

“Cardboard boxes might not sound exciting at first, but that actually gave me a surprising amount of creative freedom. You start with a blank canvas, and within VPK’s style, there’s still plenty of room to apply your own ideas. ”

Learning by doing

The internship taught her not only how to use new programs, but also how to work independently. “I really had to think through solutions myself. Instead of constantly asking for help, I learned to search for answers on my own. That’s something I’ll carry with me into the future.”
Team collaboration also went smoothly. “There was always space to share your opinion. I could suggest ideas for what to put on the packaging, and those ideas were actually discussed. That made the process really engaging.”

A culture of trust

What stuck with her most? “The atmosphere. Everyone was friendly and approachable. You quickly feel at ease.” That also helped her feel confident enough to ask questions—something she initially found difficult. “Seeing others ask questions made me realize it was okay. And that helped me a lot.”

Feedback during her internship was always given in a positive way. “We would brainstorm together about what could be improved. It wasn’t strict or distant, but more like: how can we make this even better?”

From doubt to confidence

Before starting her internship, Ilona considered continuing her studies. But her experience at VPK gave her confidence in her abilities—and the drive to start working right away. “I never thought working could be so fun. And it’s incredibly rewarding to create something that’s actually used.”

Her advice for future interns

Ilona encourages other students to fully enjoy their internship. “It flies by. And you learn so much. You’re really given responsibility and freedom to show what you can do.”
