VPK Group's Climate Approach

A sustainable future for everyone

Climate change requires immediate action. At VPK Group, we take our responsibility seriously and work on concrete solutions to reduce our ecological footprint. We do this with a clear mission and an ambitious strategy, embedded in our operations and value chain.

Our ambition: Net-Zero by 2050

SBTi
By 2050, VPK Group aims to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions across the entire value chain. This ambitious goal will be reached step by step by significantly reducing our Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions.

Three pillars of our climate approach

1. Renewable energy
We invest in solar energy, biogas, and biomass to replace fossil fuels and make our operations more sustainable.

2. Efficient logistics
With innovative solutions such as route optimization and 3D loading technology, we reduce transport emissions. These innovations are actively applied across all our locations.

3. Sustainable sourcing
Together with our suppliers, we continuously seek ways to lower the CO2 impact of raw materials.

Science-Based approach: SBTi and Net-Zero Roadmap

To achieve our ambitious reduction targets, we follow the guidelines of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Our pathway aligns with the goal of limiting global warming to a maximum of 1.5°C.

Why are Scope 3 emissions crucial?

Scope 3

Scope 3 emissions are greenhouse gas emissions that result indirectly from business activities but are not directly controlled by the company. Scope 3 emissions account for 71% of our total greenhouse gas emissions (FY 2023):

  • 53% come from purchased goods and services.
  • 17% originate from upstream transport.

Our approach to Scope 3 emissions

Mapping Scope 3 emissions
Out of the fifteen official Scope 3 categories, we have selected the nine most relevant and impactful for VPK Group.

Collaboration with suppliers
For purchased goods—the largest share of emissions—we work closely with our suppliers. They provide us with primary data annually to ensure accurate emissions calculations.

Independent verification
All Scope 3 emissions are verified by an independent party.

Scope 1 and Scope 2 Emissions

Focus on energy efficiency and renewable energy

Scope 1_2

Alongside our Scope 3 reduction targets, we actively work on reducing our Scope 1 (direct emissions from production processes and fleet) and Scope 2 (indirect emissions from energy consumption). We follow SBTi guidelines in these areas as well.

  • Scope 1: We invest in efficient technologies, alternative low-carbon fuels, and explore electrification options for our fleet. Gradually, we are replacing gas-fired installations with renewable fuel (such as biomass) and energy-efficient solutions.
  • Scope 2: We maximize the use of renewable energy and invest in on-site solutions such as solar panels.

Concrete, measurable impact by 2030

Solar Panels_Halden_4
  • Scope 1 & 2: 40% CO2 reduction compared to 2020.
  • Scope 3: A relative reduction of 52% CO2e per ton of goods sold, translating to an absolute reduction of 22% in CO2e.

These reductions are independently validated to ensure transparency and reliability. They directly contribute to our overall sustainability objectives and strengthen our position as a leader in climate-conscious business.
