Carbon emissions reduced by 30%

Oda.com/no replaced all their plastic bags with PetaFold, a completely new, self-designed corrugated cardboard box. Each box replaces three plastic bags and plays a significant role in the fight to reduce carbon emissions.

Kolonial was founded in 2013 by ten entrepreneurs with the ambition to create Norway’s best online grocery store.

Today, oda.com/no delivers a wide selection of groceries to the doors of both individuals and businesses and is the fastest-growing company in its category in the Nordic region.

Until 2019, customers received all their goods in traditional plastic bags, but this changed abruptly when Kolonial engaged the consulting firm Endrava to calculate the company’s carbon footprint.

Based on the report’s findings, Kolonial reached out to VPK with the goal of eliminating the use of plastic bags entirely.

Oda's latest version of PetaFold

VPK developed a customised product that replaced three plastic bags per order. This led to a 30 per cent reduction in carbon emissions per year for the company's deliveries.

The new boxes also improved efficiency at
Oda's warehouse. Previously, the plastic bags had to be opened and filled manually, whereas the PetaFold boxes are designed to be erected by machines, which is a significant time saver in handling.

The climate impact of the new PetaFold box has also been tested, and the results show that one box can replace up to three regular plastic bags, reducing carbon emissions by over 40 percent per box.

Delivering in cardboard boxes also makes unpacking easier for Oda’s customers, and they provide much better insulation and protection for the goods than plastic bags, reducing errors and waste.
