Why Certification matters at VPK Packaging

In packaging, quality is often judged by what customers see, structural performance, print consistency, delivery reliability. But true quality starts long before a box reaches the production line.

Why certification matters at VPK Packaging and for our customers

In packaging, quality is often judged by what customers see, structural performance, print consistency, delivery reliability. But true quality starts long before a box reaches the production line.

At VPK Packaging, quality is underpinned by independent certifications that validate how we operate as a Group and at site level. These aren't symbolic accreditations. They are structured, externally assessed systems that ensure consistency, accountability and continuous improvement across every part of the business. And that matters to our customers.

Certification as proof, not promise

In today's supply chains, trust must be evidenced. Buyers are increasingly required to demonstrate that their suppliers meet defined standards in governance, sustainability, quality management and ethical performance. VPK's certifications provide that assurance.

At Group level, we hold EcoVadis Platinum, placing VPK in the top 1% of companies assessed worldwide. EcoVadis evaluates environmental performance, labour and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement. Platinum status confirms that these are not local initiatives but embedded, measurable practices across the organisation.

For customers, that means alignment with ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) expectations and simplified due diligence.

Across our sites in the UK and Ireland, internally recognised standards such as ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) provide further structure. These systems require documented processes, annual audits and continuous review. They reduce variation, improve traceability and drive operational discipline. In short, they make quality repeatable.

For packaging used in food and fast-moving consumer goods supply chains, hygiene and product safety are equally critical. All VPK sites operate to the BRCGS Packaging Materials standard, with each site achieving the highest AA rating in its most recent audit.

BRCGS certification is widely recognised by global retailers and food manufacturers as the benchmark for packaging safety and quality management. Achieving and maintaining AA status requires rigorous controls around hygiene, production environments, material handling and traceability, all verified through independent audit.

Why this benefits customers directly

Certifications are often viewed as internal governance tools. In reality, they create tangible advantages for the brands, and businesses we work with.

Consistency across locations

When quality systems are aligned across multiple sites, customers can expect the same standards of performance, regardless of where their packaging is produced.

Reduced risk

Independent verification lowers the risk of process failure, non-compliance or unexpected variation. This is particularly critical in food-contact environments, where standards such as BRCGS Packaging Materials ensure strict hygiene, traceability and product safety controls.

Faster procurement approval

Many procurement frameworks require suppliers to demonstrate ISO accreditation, sustainability scoring or ethical compliance. Holding recognised certifications simplifies onboarding and reduces administrative burden.

Confidence in sourcing

Chain of Custody certifications such as FSC(r) provide transparency around material provenance, supporting customers with their own responsible sourcing commitments.

Continuous improvement, not static compliance

Certifications are reviewed annually. Platforms such as EcoVadis provide benchmarking and structured feedback, ensuring standards evolve rather than stagnate.

Quality is not a departmentt

Importantly, certification is not owned by one team.

It influences how materials are sourced, how sites operate, how risk is managed and how performance is monitored.

It reinforces discipline across the business:

  • Clear documentation
  • Defined accountability
  • Measurable targets
  • Transparent reporting
  • Ongoing audit and review

This structure supports operational resilience and reduces variability, both critical in modern supply chains where disruption can be costly.

More than a badge

In competitive markets, it's easy to view certification as a marketing tool. But its real value lies in the systems behind it. Independent accreditation confirms that VPK's processes are not informal or reactive. They are structured, externally validated and continuously assessed.

For customers, that translates into clarity and confidence. Confidence that packaging will meet specification. Confidence that sourcing is responsible. Confidence that processes are controlled and repeatable. Confidence that quality is not assumed, it is verified.
